We believe architecture and nature are not opposites. On the contrary, they can strengthen one another. As designers, we see it as our responsibility—and opportunity—to contribute to nature-inclusive environments where architecture supports ecological systems rather than displacing them. In some projects, design can even play an active role in restoring nature.

For us, designing in lush environments begins with carefully observing what the landscape already offers and understanding how natural systems function. Existing vegetation, water flows, and ecosystems are treated as guiding frameworks for design. You approach the assignment based on the type of landscape or environment. In coastal areas, for example, mangroves are a vital yet vulnerable ecosystem. Native to the Caribbean, they support a rich diversity of marine life, birds, and plants, while also playing a crucial role in carbon sequestration and climate resilience. When designing in such contexts, these natural elements must be integrated as fundamental components of the project.

Designs for nature projects also require working with a broad range of environmental factors, like improving water quality. A challenge in these type of project is creating spaces that people can experience without disturbing ecological balance. Nature should always be in the lead. Built interventions are therefore deliberately modest and carefully positioned. Material choices play an important role in this approach. We select materials that resonate with the character of the landscape and age naturally, ensuring that human-made structures remain secondary to their surroundings. Collaboration with ecologists and local nature organizations helps us determine where and how interventions can be placed without disrupting sensitive areas.
