We’re working on the design of the Technical School, as part of a large-scale development of the Saba Comprehensive School. Within this new building there will be room for two classrooms plus four workshop-rooms.
A design for a new school in Saba is much more than just making facilities in which you can teach. We wanted to make a space that inspires students and makes them look forward to attending every day.
Connecting the campus
Where children currently experience a lack of space, the new building will provide more space to learn, meet each other and learn to work with tools. This new building will fit with the other existing buildings on the campus. It will be located where the current car park is now. We were allowed to build on the existing carpark but there still had to be a parking facility. This is one of the reasons to elevate the building.
The other reason is to make sure all the existing and new buildings can be connected on the ground floor level. All of the school buildings will also be interconnected on a higher level, by the spacious terraces. These terraces are designed as an outside meeting space for the students and teachers. We’ll ensure proper shading with the use of other terraces above and with a pergola on the top floor.
Opening up the building
The new Technical School has four stories. The two bottom ones are smaller and veneered with local rocks. This creates a feeling that the building is floating and making it look less monolithic. The two top floors are more spacious with about 240m2 each. Here are the workshop-rooms located. The building will get a red roof, connecting it with the existing buildings and the traditional Saban architecture.
With our design we wanted to open up the school. That is why we’ve incorporated large windows, to ensure students have a view on the beautiful surrounding landscape. By placing large windows you can also see what other students are working on in the classrooms. This helps to create a safe working and learning environment for students and teachers.
Creating a better future
Besides a Technical School, we are also working on the Gym as part of the new Campus Saba. Designing a new school gives you the opportunity to create a space where the community can come together and that enhances a feeling of pride and belonging. We are convinced that a contemporary school can connect the students with the rest of the world and still be strongly rooted within the culture of Saba.
