After three years of construction, the Analytisch Diagnostisch Centrum Curaçao (A.D.C.) laboratory in Willemstad has it’s soft opening. A festive celebration for invited guests took place today. The 5,500 m² building will be completely finalized in the coming weeks. Most of the laboratory equipment has been installed and soon the laboratory will be fully operational.
Lyongo Juliana reflects on the realization of the project: “It is an incredibly special moment to see your design finished after all these years. I am very grateful for the hard work of everyone who contributed to making this building a reality.” Over the past few years, ADC staff were invited to visit the construction site to get a glimpse of their future workplace. “Their reactions were always very positive. For them – and for all residents of Curaçao – this marks a milestone for healthcare: an innovative, state-of-the-art laboratory that sets a new standard for medical facilities in the region.”
A futureproof building
The blue and white façade immediately catches the eye on the square. Together with the nearby hospital and St. Thomas College, this building surrounds the square. This building is situated directly on Otrobanda. To relate to the lower buildings of the historic neighborhood, the mass has been carefully broken down into several distinct, stepped volumes. This reduces the perceived scale and allows it to connect with the surroundings. Although one consistent material is used – alternating blue and white tones distinguish the different volumes. These colors not only create a strong contrast with the warm tones of the nearby hospital – but also evoke cleanliness and professionalism – qualities that reflect the function of the laboratory.
Lyongo: “I hope this laboratory inspires others to elevate the quality of workspaces in Curaçao, creating more comfortable working environments and more sustainable buildings. From the very beginning, we designed with the future in mind—recognizing that needs will evolve over time.” As Lyongo explains, future-proofing and sustainability form the core of the design. Roofs and façades are insulated, and sunshades limit direct sunlight. Like the nearby Curaçao Medical Center (CMC), the building collects and reuses water from air-conditioning systems for irrigation. Solar panels and provisions for potential deep-sea water cooling further demonstrate the project’s commitment to energy efficiency and environmental innovation. The facade is also constructed in such a way that the space can be used flexibly in the future. We created a fine rhythm of 90-centimeter modules so that you can play with the layout of the spaces—should there be a need for it in the future.
A look inside
Inside, the office and laboratories are currently being furnished. Almost all laboratories – except for pathology – are located on the second floor. This layout facilitates collaboration between departments – and enables shared use of facilities such as darkrooms – freezers – and locker areas. “Designing a laboratory comes with many restrictions. Some rooms have a high biosafety level (level 3) – meaning biological substances are handled there. These spaces must be designed to minimize dust accumulation – which is why surfaces run seamlessly from floor to wall.”
In addition to research spaces, the building includes offices, meeting rooms, and communal areas. To contrast with the sterile laboratory environments – these spaces feature warmer colors and materials – creating a more comfortable atmosphere. Indoor gardens provide informal meeting spots while balconies on the upper floors offer opportunities to step outside, enjoy the view, and connect with colleagues. “We felt it was important that it be an improvement for the ADC employees compared to their existing work environment. The previous laboratory had a closed core, where employees could not even see their colleagues on the other side of the corridor. As mentioned, this new building encourages interaction. Look, for example, at how the staircases are angled to increase the chance of encounters. This sense of openness is reflected throughout the design.”
Completing the project
Over the past few years, Lyongo and our project manager Vernon have worked closely with the contractor and the client to complete this project. A process of this magnitude naturally presents challenges, but we are very proud of the end result and hope that everyone who visits or works in the building will truly enjoy the design. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the realization of this design.
In the coming period, the building will be fitted out by ADC with all necessary equipment and office supplies. The inner gardens will also be completed, creating a relaxing green space.
