Last week, our colleagues Lyongo Juliana and Usama Al-Dayri welcomed a group of students to the office of the IMC Weekendschool for the Experience Day Technologie & Bouw. The 15 high school students got to do a workshop with Lyongo and Usama and were able to ask questions about the profession of an architect.
In a short presentation, Lyongo and Usama first explained how their journey as becoming an architect has been. After that the students got to work on a case in which they had to make a design for a family member. The goal was to come up with a floor plan where someone who needs care, such as a grandfather or grandmother, has a nice living space and where they themselves could live – in order to take care of them. AThe question they had to answer was what their cultural background had an influence on the design. They also had to look at what the relationship with the outside would be for the house. There were a lot of fun and inspiring ideas which we evaluated together.
By explaining what your study or career path could look like and giving a first impression of the profession, we hope to inspire the next generation of designers and urban planners.
About IMC Weekendschool
During the Experience Day Technology & Construction, students visit two companies in Amsterdam, where they are introduced to professions that they may be able to perform later. Our colleagues are often involved with the IMC Weekendschool, an initiative to provide education to children in poor neighborhoods. At ten locations in seven major cities, they organize a three-year curriculum with lessons every Sunday for students from groups 7 and 8 plus the first year of the first year of secondary school. In recent years, we have been helping, where possible, with guest lectures for architecture and construction subjects.
