Update Captain Quarters Saba

The reconstruction of Captain’s Quarters is reaching its final phase! This will be our last update before the building is completed. The finishing touches are being applied to the interior, which is now almost ready to welcome its future guests.

The scaffolding has been largely removed, revealing the beautifully reconstructed facade. The final work on the exterior is being completed, after which the outdoor areas will be finished as well.

Construction updates

With this update we are happy to share the striking decorative windows. The stained-glass windows, carefully crafted to match the style seen in the original drawings, have been installed, further reinforcing the building’s historical charm. This marks the last step in transforming this historic site into (hotel) apartments.

Honoring the history of Captain’s Quarters while embracing the present: with our design the interior remains true to its 19th-century origins with a wooden finish, just as it was in the past. However, we have added a modern twist: in some areas, the wooden paneling has been given a special washing treatment, creating an aesthetically refined look that aligns with contemporary design trends. We have also added insulation to the walls and roof to improve energy efficiency— which is still a rare feature in Saba.

A story of heritage and reconstruction

Originally a 19th-century whaling captain’s house, Captain’s Quarters later became one of the island’s most esteemed hotels. However, the building was destroyed by Hurricane George in 1998. Recognizing its historical significance, we initiated a reconstruction in 2017 to restore both its exterior and interior. To recreate it as truthfully as possible, we relied on archival photos and old schematic drawings, piecing together details to ensure accuracy.

With the final stages now underway, Captain’s Quarters is set to once again become a landmark on the island. A perfect blend of past and present, this reconstruction stands as a tribute to its history while offering the comforts of modern living.
