On the way to Bonaire’s famous salt flats and iconic Pink Beach, you will find Villa Shangrila. A project that we have been working on for the past years. We’re excited to share the design as the building takes shape.
Our design harmoniously blends sleek architecture with soft, organic forms inspired by nature. The villa’s white facades stand out against the vibrant greens of the landscape and the turquoise sea.
Working with the elements
The proximity to the water brings unique challenges and opportunities. Special attention has been given to materials to ensure the house withstands the corrosive effects of saltwater. At the same time, the villa’s design makes clever use of the cooling breezes from the water, enhancing the comfort of its residents.
This translates into the signature feature of the villa: its raised roof. Just like other of our projects on Bonaire such as Villa van de Sande and Villa Catalina, the roof has been raised to allow more air to pass through. Cross-ventilation is further enhanced by large doors that can be fully opened. If the doors are closed, ventilation openings above the doors and windows will ensure a continuous airflow.
Inside Villa Shangrila
There are two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The clients actively contributed to the design, choosing to continue the organic shapes in the bathrooms. This strengthens the coherence in the design and creates a sense of continuity and balance.
In addition to its two bedrooms, the villa includes a spacious garage that has been designed with future adaptability in mind. This space can easily be converted into a third bedroom. The flexible layout ensures that Villa Shangrila meets the needs of its inhabitants as their lives evolve.
Next up
The coming period will be spent finishing the building and adding plants. Construction has been underway for some time but we hope to finish the project in 2025.
